WHAT IS THE FAFSA?

The FAFSA is a students free application for loans and grants. If a student is wishing to apply for federal loans and grants to pay for college or university expenses, the FAFSA is the application for doing so. Also, if a student is planning to use the TOPS scholarship, students must also complete the FAFSAa for this process.

How to Apply for TOPS and Other Financial Aid

Any senior planning to receive any type of financial assistance (scholarships, grants, loans, work study, etc.) must complete the 2015-2016 Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is also your application for TOPS and Pell Grants. Amounts for all forms of financial assistance will be determined based on information provided in this application.

There are two ways to apply:

  1. Students are encouraged to apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you would like to complete the application in paper before submitting it online, a paper version that corresponds to the online application, the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet, can be ordered from www.FSAPubs.orgor downloaded in PDF from www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov/worksheet.
  2. Complete the paper version of FAFSA and mail it to the application office. (This paper version is not the same as the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet mentioned above.) The paper version of FAFSA can be downloaded at www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov, or it can be requested by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID.

The following information must be available to complete the FAFSA:

  • Student and parent Social Security Numbers
  • Student driver’s license number
  • 2015 federal tax information or tax returns for student and parents
  • Records of untaxed income, such as Social Security benefits, welfare benefits, and veterans benefits for student and parents
  • Information on savings, investments, and business and farm assets for student and parents

Warning! Be wary of organizations that charge a fee to submit your application. You can always file free of charge at the web sites listed above.

The deadline for submission of FAFSA to receive financial aid in the state of Louisiana is July 1, 2016. However, the earlier the application is filed the sooner you will be notified of your award.
